Special Exhibition: “On the Front Lines” Military Veterans at the Art Students League of New York

Since the passage of the GI Bill during World War II, thousands of veterans have studied at the Art Students League of New York. Returning World War II veterans rejuvenated the League, and the modernist paintings of veterans—including Robert Rauschenberg, Al Held, Charles Alston, Paul Jenkins, Alfred Leslie, Stanley Boxer and Michael Goldberg—kept the League in the forefront of American art.

This June and July, the Art Students League of New York will pay tribute to that legacy with the exhibition On the Front Lines: Military Veterans at The Art Students League of New York, featuring the work of 20 prominent artists who served their country and studied or taught at the League from 1945 to the present. The exhibition will run from June 19 to July 29 at the League’s Phyllis Harriman Mason Gallery at 215 West 57th Street. The exhibition is co-curated by Jillian Russo, Ph. D., the League’s curator, and Executive Director Ira Goldberg.

Preview reception: Thursday, June 18th at 6:00pm

The League also issued an artist call for any veteran who studied at the League to participate in a coinciding juried show in the League’s lobby and main office. The League will be recognizing and honoring all identifiable veterans who attended the League since World War II.
